Below is a list of some activities that the TACAS Youth Group plans
and/or help coordinates. While these are the main
activities that the Youth Group partakes in, they are not ALL
the activities at the Youth Group does. For information concerning
other events, please check the "Upcoming Events" section.
Meals on Wheels
This event is an easy, fun way for people to get involved in TACAS
Youth Group activities. Meals
on Wheels volunteers
are driven around downtown Raleigh by adult chaperones to deliver
meals to homebound, elderly, or disabled local residents who would otherwise be unable to
maintain their dietary needs.
So if you like to have some fun with your friends while doing a
meaningful project, this is the one for you!
Retirement House Recitals
Though only in its second year, Retirement House Recitals have been
very successful so far. Many people participate by performing, setting
up, and helping out, and the performances are all very well-received
by the audience. Most of these recitals involve the dancers from
Chinese Language School, several musical showcases, and Chinese yo-yo
exhibitions. If you play any musical instrument or have any other
talents, you should definitely consider participating in this
activity. Even if you are not a musician, or if you do not feel
comfortable performing in front of others, you are still strongly
encouraged to help out with these recitals: it's really fun!
Habitat for Humanity
New to this year's line-up of activities is Habitat for Humanity.
Volunteers for this event get the chance to help build "simple,
decent, affordable" houses for those in
need of adequate shelter. If you like hands-on construction, or even
if you don't, you should definitely participate in this event. If you
have never built a house before...don't worry, no experience is
necessary! There will be adults who are knowledgeable about building
that will help you get started. Unfortunately, because of the safety
concern, Wake County's Habitat for Humanity only allows for those 16
and up to participate. If you're not yet 16, don't worry, just be sure
you get involved in Habitat for Humanity when you are.
Wintergreen
Ski Trip
In the month of February, when the air is crisp and brisk, the Youth
Group embarks on a single-day round-trip journey to Wintergreen Ski
Resort to have some fun in the snow. Skiers and snowboarders of all
ages and levels have all thoroughly enjoyed this Saturday trip in
the past. If you have never skied before, this is a great
opportunity for you to get introduced to a truly exciting sport. And
if you have skied before, this is a great opportunity for you to ski
alongside your friends and have some fun.
Beach
Trip
Every year, around the end of school, the Youth Group goes on a
beach trip. Though in the past this trip has been during Memorial
Weekend, because of all the snow make-up days, this year, the
four-day long beach trip will take place in early June (exact dates
will be announced in the "Upcoming Events" section). Everyone is
invited to participate in this activity, which has always been a
huge success. Not only will you have lots of fun in the sun, you'll
be able to mingle with your friends and get to know other Youth
Group members better through activities such as capture-the-flag,
clamming, crabbing, walks on the beach, and many, many others. It's
sure to be a blast! Be sure you're there for all the fun!
Puppet Show
Using shadow puppets to reenact Chinese folk stories and myths,
the Youth Group Puppeteers introduce and share parts of Chinese
culture and tradition with the audience. The performances usually take
place at local libraries, special events at places such as Duke
University and the N.C. School of Science and Math, and any other
location the puppeteers are invited to perform. If you are interested
in sharing Chinese culture with others while entertaining them at the
same time, then a puppeteer is the job for you.
Christmas
Party
The TACAS Youth Group Christmas Party is a chance for everyone to
get together and have some fun before everyone leaves for winter
break vacation. With a DJ playing the latest songs, a table full of
food, and a wide dance floor, the Christmas Party is the perfect way
to finish off the year with a blast. What's better than hanging out
with your friends, eating, and listening to music?
Mothers
Day Picnic
At
the annual Mothers Day Picnic, Youth Group members help out
with setup, the charity bake sale, the festivities and other
activities. If you're into having a relaxing time while doing
something nice for your mother, don't miss the chance to join in
helping out at this event!
