The
Triangle Area's largest Chinese New Year Festival will take place on January 26,
2008 in the Exposition Center at the NC State
Fairgrounds. To
further increase community involvement, diversify the
features offered at the Festival, foster world literacy,
human relations, and awareness of Chinese community
offerings, and to promote reading and writing goals in
NC's Standard Course of study, the Festival will
include an Art and Essay contest during the weeks
leading up to the Chinese New Year.
The contest is co-sponsored by the
Raleigh
Chinese Language School and the Festival host, the
Triangle
Area Chinese American Society.
A person may enter one or both contests, but receive only
one Participants' Prize (see below). Awards of first, second, and third places, plus
honorable mentions will be announced at the Festival. Essays and artwork will not be returned
unless contestants pick them up at the Festival after
4:30 PM on the day of the Festival. Participants prizes and Category
Winners'
ribbons must be claimed by contestants during the
Festival.
VISUAL ART CONTEST (Three age 8 and
below, ages 9-12, ages 13-18
Criteria: Drawings may be color or black and white, using
any type of ink, on any type of paper no larger than 12
X 18 inches, and cover one of the following art topics. Use books, websites (not limited to the ones
below), interviews, and films to gather information.
- Draw your Chinese Zodiac animal
- Create a Chinese place mat with all twelve zodiac animals
- Draw your family celebrating a traditional Chinese New Year
ESSAY CONTEST (Three English
language categories: ages 10 and below, ages
11-13, ages 14-18, two Chinese language categories:
ages 10 and below, ages 11-16)
Essays may be in English or
Chinese, should be no more than 500 words in length,
handwritten or typed, on single sided pages, and cover
one of the following essay topics. Use
books, websites (not limited to the ones below),
interviews, and films to gather information.
- Select
one Chinese New Year custom or food and describe the
legend behind it
- Describe one thing in Chinese culture that impresses you and why
- What
are some famous Chinese inventions and how did they
become known to the rest of the world?
- Write
about your favorite Chinese myth/legend and why you
like it
Where
to mail entries and Due Date
Judging
"Celebrity judges" like
local journalists, school administrators, and
international authors or public speakers will be sought
to judge the entries. Winners and honorable mentions
will be announced by 1 PM on the day of the Festival.
Prizes
- Each
entry will be displayed on a bulletin board at the
Festival.
- Each
participant will receive a traditional red envelop
of Chinese New Year lucky money (cash), regardless
of the participant’s age or merit of the entry,
when they check in at the Contest Information
Table.
- Selected
essay authors will be contacted to read their essay
on the Little Theater stage at the Festival at a
schedule time.
- Category
Winners (first, second, honorable mention) will be
given ribbons.
Blue ribbon winners will be publicized by
news release to English and Chinese newspapers in
the Triangle area.
