2010 TACAS Youth Leadership Scholarship Award Announcement

September 30, 2010, Triangle Area Chinese American Society, Raleigh

The Advisory Board of the Triangle Area Chinese American Society, TACAS, is pleased to announce that Jasmin Huang and Gloria Lai are the recipients of the inaugural 2010 TACAS Youth Leadership Scholarship award.

Ms. Jasmin Huang
Ms. Gloria Lai

Jasmin Huang is a senior at William G. Enloe High School. She is an active youth leader of Raleigh Chinese Language School (RCLS), TACAS Youth Group, and the local Chinese American community.  At age five, Jasmin started performing at the International Festival,   TACAS Chinese New Year celebration, and various cultural events.  She has mastered not only Chinese folk dances, Lion dance, and Dragon dance but also various music instruments.  Jasmin is now the President of the TACAS Youth Symphony.  Besides performing art, Jasmin enjoys volunteering for the local Chinese American community as an RCLS teacher assistant, Family of Chinese Children (FCC) dance teacher, and as a youth volunteering organizer for last year's Chinese New Yer Festival.  Jasmin finds it rewarding through these services to enrich the cultural lives of others.  Outside of TACAS, Jasmin is an International Baccalaureate senior Diploma candidate, the President of Enloe's Medical Bio-Science Academy, and holds many student government and school club positions.  She strives for academic excellence with shadowing doctors, and research internship at NCSU, NC Museum of Life and Science, and NC Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics.

Jasmin is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Yen-Min & Yun Huang, 黃炎民,王昀,members of TACAS.

Gloria Lai is a Leesville Road High school senior. Many school activities and groups have influenced and transformed Gloria as she grew up.   Art has made a huge impact throughout her life. To Gloria, art is a way of self expression and independence, it is a whole new dimension, a place where there are no limits and no rules.  Not only has art been prominent in Gloria's life, but so has TACAS, Triangle Area Chinese American Society.  As a member of TACAS, Gloria has participated in countless volunteer activities and events. From Mothers day picnics, to International festival and Chinese New Year. Throughout the years in TACAS and as an Youth Group officer for three years, Gloria has gained so much experience. Her social, management and leader ship skills have benefited from planning and organizing a variety of events. One of the things Gloria loves about TACAS is the chance to work with TACAS Youth Group. It has encouraged her and allowed her to meet people from different backgrounds, and those not only of Chinese descent. TACAS is so diverse and united, not only do they spread Chinese culture but also gives the second generation the chance to learn more about Chinese traditions and backgrounds.

Gloria is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Fuyung & Chung-Jung Lee Lai, 賴福勇,李仲蓉,members of TACAS.

The TACAS Youth Scholarship Program is designed to motivate high school students of TACAS members to develop leadership skills for future advancement in college while pursuing academic, athletic, and artistic excellence. The award recipients are selected by an independent Scholarship Committee.  Administration of the scholarship program is by the TACAS Advisory Board (AB).

In making the Committee selection, Prof. Yuan-Shin Lee, Committee Chair, wrote:

The Scholarships Committee has evaluated and arrived at her conclusions on
the 2010 TACAS Scholarships recommendation.

Based on the evaluation and recommendations from all six committee
members, following is the conclusion by the Committee on the selection of
the 2010 TACAS Youth Scholarships:

I.  SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT IN ACADEMIC  - Ms. Jasmine Huang

II. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT IN ARTISTIC  - Ms. Gloria Lai

The Committee feels the selected candidates have very good credential and
are very deserving the honor and encouragement from TACAS. It is suggested
that TACAS confers such honor to the above-mentioned individual
candidates.
